News About Town: The Board of Commissioners will vote whether to approve Zoning Item 2021-727, Mount Harmony Cottages (2700 Mount Harmony Road) at their regular meeting on December 13. The applicant proposes to change the zoning of the property from R-15 single-family to R-9 (CD) for the purpose of constructing 17 single-family residences on a 6.281-acre lot. For context, an acre is 43,560 square feet. The R-15 zoning district is designed to accommodate detached single dwellings with a minimum lot size of 15,000 square feet while R-9 is designed to accommodate those same dwelling types at a minimum lot size of 9,000 square feet. The current design features more tree save and a slightly different road and lot configuration than was originally presented.

One Good Thing: The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) Office of Early Learning has released Literacy at Home, an at-home resource to support Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), a recent addition to training for elementary level teachers. Literacy at Home helps support North Carolina’s youngest readers through exploring the essential components of literacy. The site links to printables and online resources as well as teaching approaches to provide direction for parents and caregivers using the tools.
