Two representatives took a tour of the damage and assessed that it was an EF1 tornado started in Pineville and traveled via Highway 51 to Matthews before veering off toward Hemby Bridge. EF1 is the second weakest type of tornado. Wind speeds topped at about 95 miles per hour. The tornado’s path was a width of approximately 150 yards.
No injuries were reported, but Charlotte neighborhood Settler’s Landing and areas of downtown Matthews suffered significant damage.
