HAWK Meeting: Butterflies of the Carolinas

Kathy Marshburn, of Vibrant Wings, started her butterfly farm as a tribute to her late daughter, Violet. Witnessing a butterfly release, she was deeply affected and realized that butterflies can be uplifting and a symbol of hope during times of grief or celebration.

According to her website, Vibrant Wings Butterflies has released butterflies for just about every event imaginable, happy and sad. Butterflies are a beautiful way to celebrate the beginning of a new life, like a wedding or a new baby. They can commemorate loved ones who have passed on, celebrate recovery, serve as a symbol of love and hope, and educate our children of the wonders of nature.

Visit Kathy’s exhibit at the Matthews Alive Festival, then come and meet her and learn about the joys and challenges of owning a butterfly farm.

Kathy Marshburn feels a strong personal connection to butterflies and started commercially breeding in 2002. Some of her favorite butterflies are the zebra longwing, spicebush swallowtail and the malachite. She served on the board of directors of the International Butterfly Breeders Association for nine years including three years as President.
